Introduction:

Most business in today’s environment need to solve novel problems or existing problems in a novel way, either on a day to day basis, or as part of long term strategic management. Habitually using solutions that have worked in similar situations will stifle growth and efficiency.

Aim:

To enable a practical understanding of problem solving and creative thinking. To have experimented with a number of tools that will aid the effective definition of problems and release creativity.

Target Audience:

For people who need to find solutions for dealing with change, or who are expected to continuously find new and more efficient ways of working.

Experential learning and workshop

  • Power point presentation
  • Group work and reviews

  • Theory sessions on thinking types and problem types
  • Action planning for transfer to work

  • Types of thinking (linear and non-linear) right brain / left brain§ Individual creativity / group creativity
  • Methods and tools including brainstorming and mind maps
  • Visual, audio and kinaesthetic tools
  • Types of problems
  • Meta-position approach
  • Questioning tools
  • Problem solving from a ‘complexity’ approach

Outcomes:

By the end of the

  • have experimented with a number of creative thinking tools
  • increased their ability to define problems accurately
  • understand the limits and benefits of group vs. individual approaches
  • I have a greater understanding of their own ‘thinking’ preferences
